Volvo Penta Officially Launches G17 Series 450kW Natural Gas Generator Engine, Opens New Low-Carbon Power Track for Global Mission-Critical Scenarios

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – January 20, 2026 – Volvo Penta, the industrial power division of Volvo Group, held the global debut of its brand-new G17 natural gas generator engine platform at the 2026 PowerGen International Exhibition, bringing a compact, high-efficiency, dual-fuel adaptable gas power solution tailored for pipeline natural gas supply conditions, targeting data centers, industrial manufacturing parks, municipal standby power and large-scale commercial complex prime power markets worldwide .

 

The all-new G17 power unit is a 17-liter six-cylinder spark ignition natural gas engine, developed as the gas-fueled counterpart of Volvo Penta’s mature D17 diesel generator engine platform. Under 1800rpm standard operating speed, the unit stably outputs 450kW rated power, with a compact overall outline that greatly reduces the land occupation area of the complete generator set, cutting customer’s civil engineering and cabin construction investment by nearly 18%. The core design of G17 fully matches direct pipeline gas access working conditions, capable of running smoothly on standard pipeline-quality natural gas with excellent purity, and also supports renewable natural gas (RNG) mixed combustion without major modification of internal engine components; LNG and CNG fuel supply modes are optional add-ons according to project demands, meeting diversified global client fuel layouts.

 

One core highlight of the G17 gas generator engine lies in its strong 24-hour continuous full-load operation capability. Optimized piston cooling, intelligent air-fuel ratio closed-loop control and heavy-duty crankshaft structure effectively lower thermal load during long-hour operation, extending the overhaul cycle to over 12,000 running hours, far exceeding the average maintenance interval of competitive gas engines of the same power segment. For end users requiring round-the-clock stable power supply, Volvo Penta provides two complete genset configurations matching the G17 engine: silent enclosed cabin model with built-in noise reduction silencer system, and open cabin open-frame model for outdoor centralized power station layout, allowing customers to select matching schemes based on noise control standards and site space limits.

Industries such as digital computing, chemical manufacturing and urban public facilities need reliable, low-emission power equipment that can run nonstop day and night. The G17 natural gas engine fills the gap in our medium-power gas generation portfolio, inheriting Volvo Group’s heavy-duty vehicle-grade reliable manufacturing technology, while realizing flexible fuel switching between conventional pipeline natural gas and green renewable gas. Clients with direct pipe gas supply conditions can directly connect the genset to municipal gas pipelines, eliminating complicated gas pretreatment equipment and simplifying the whole construction process.”

 

In terms of environmental performance, the G17 series natural gas generator achieves a 35% drop in nitrogen oxide emissions compared with equivalent power diesel generator units, fully complying with EU Stage V and North American EPA Tier 4 exhaust emission standards, without extra complex exhaust aftertreatment devices. The engine adopts modular component layout, with fewer vulnerable spare parts, which greatly simplifies daily inspection and maintenance work for on-site operators, effectively cutting long-term labor and maintenance costs.
