January 20, 2026, Gothenburg, Sweden – Volvo Penta, a global leading supplier of industrial power systems, officially launched its brand-new G17 six-cylinder natural gas generator set platform. Developed based on the mature D17 diesel engine shared platform, this new product completes the brand’s dual-energy power generation portfolio of diesel and gas power units. It delivers a new generation of backup power solutions balancing high reliability and low carbon emissions for mission-critical facilities worldwide, including AI computing data centers, hospitals, commercial complexes and remote mining sites, supporting smooth energy transition across all industries.
The newly unveiled G17 model is a 17-liter inline six-cylinder spark-ignited gas engine. It can stably operate on both pipeline-grade conventional natural gas and renewable biomethane. No extra complex fuel conditioning equipment is required, as the unit can directly connect to existing on-site gas pipeline infrastructure, greatly simplifying installation procedures and cutting upfront supporting construction investment. At the standard speed of 1800 rpm, the engine delivers a power output of up to 450 kW, achieving a more compact footprint among products with equivalent power ratings, which effectively reduces comprehensive construction costs including plant civil engineering, soundproof enclosures and pipeline layout. Equipped with Volvo’s exclusive optimized load response system, the unit can rapidly complete load switching under extreme conditions such as sudden grid blackouts and instantaneous surges of computing load. Its control precision of voltage and frequency fluctuation outperforms the industry average standard, fully securing power supply for non-interruptible loads such as servers and precision medical equipment.
Kristian Vekas, Product Manager for Industrial Power Generation at Volvo Penta, stated at the launch event that there is no universal path for global energy transition, and multiple power technologies including diesel, gas and energy storage need to develop in parallel. The release of the G17 gas genset marks a critical milestone in the brand’s diversified energy layout. Unlike traditional backup power relying solely on diesel fuel, this unit drastically cuts full-lifecycle carbon emissions, NOₓ and particulate matter. It not only complies with increasingly stringent environmental regulations in Europe, the Middle East and other regions, but also provides a practical decarbonization route for enterprises with carbon neutrality targets. Moreover, the G17 shares a large number of common spare parts, electronic control systems and maintenance protocols with the D17 diesel genset. Clients can select power types flexibly according to project budgets and local fuel supply conditions, and effectively control costs for spare parts stock and staff training in later operation.
Apart from standalone natural gas generator sets, Volvo Penta also rolled out an integrated hybrid microgrid solution combining the G17 unit with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling intelligent linkage among gas gensets, energy storage systems and municipal power grids. The storage system charges during off-peak electricity price periods and supplies power preferentially at peak hours, while the gas unit only acts as the ultimate backup against extreme power outages, further cutting long-term consumption of gas or diesel fuel. All Volvo power generation engines are factory-certified to run on HVO renewable paraffinic diesel. R&D of dual-fuel diesel-hydrogen variants for its diesel product line is also underway to continuously expand the low-carbon power portfolio.

Vekas added that global order inquiries for the G17 natural gas generator set are now fully open. Volvo’s technical team can customize unit configurations, sound attenuation enclosures and automatic control systems for working conditions in various industries. Third-party pre-shipment inspection and certification services are also available to meet full foreign trade procedures including L/C settlement and customs clearance filing for export orders.
