Volvo Penta has officially launched its brand-new G17 spark-ignited natural gas generator engine, expanding its stationary power generation product portfolio to provide a low-carbon alternative solution for global data centers and commercial critical power scenarios. The G17 engine shares the same mature heavy-duty platform as the classic D17 diesel engine of Volvo Penta, realizing high commonality of spare parts and maintenance tools.
Adopting a 6-cylinder in-line 17-liter design, the G17 gas engine can output a rated continuous power of 450kWe at 1800rpm. It can run stably on both conventional pipeline natural gas and renewable biomethane (RNG), cutting net carbon emissions by more than 30% compared with traditional diesel generator sets while greatly reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate pollutant emissions.
The G17 unit can be directly connected to urban existing gas pipeline infrastructure without additional fuel pretreatment equipment, greatly simplifying on-site installation construction work and lowering the overall project civil engineering investment. With optimized combustion control technology, the gas genset has excellent load acceptance performance and ultra-fast power response speed, which can quickly switch to full-load output when the public power grid fails.
“Now the global energy transition requires diversified fuel paths rather than a single technical route. The G17 gas generator enables our customers to achieve carbon reduction goals on the premise of retaining the ultra-high reliability of Volvo heavy-duty power,” said Kristian Vekas, Product Manager of Industrial Power Generation at Volvo Penta. “The compact overall design of the G17 can reduce the size of the silent enclosure, helping clients save construction space and enclosure manufacturing costs.”

Volvo Penta added that the G17 gas generator set is fully compatible with the brand’s intelligent monitoring system, supporting remote fault diagnosis, operation data visualization and linkage control with microgrid systems. It has obtained global mainstream safety and emission certification and is available for order delivery in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa markets starting from February 2026.
